A boom lift is a popular elevated work platform (EWP) option if you’re working at heights. Maxing out at 42-55 metres, they’re ideal for light building maintenance or signage work.

Our boom lift hire department is always cranking, because they’re a safe and adaptable piece of machinery that help take care of a wide range of jobs. If you’re researching them for your own job, you’re probably asking the question ‘How much does boom lift hire cost?’ and whether there is a standard price for Brisbane boom lift hire.

As the premier Brisbane EWP hire experts, we’re going to answer those questions for you today!

Is There a Standard Boom Lift Hire Cost?

There isn’t a standard boom lift hire cost. Every job is different, so different companies will have their own costings based on a variety of factors. What we can do is go through what those factors are, so you have a rough idea of what to expect.

Things like the length of the job, it’s height and whether or not you need an operator, will have an impact on the price. For an accurate quote, chat with your boom lift hire company about the job at hand and they’ll be able to give you an accurate quote.

What Affects the Cost of Boom Lift Hire?

There are a few main factors that come into play when pricing boom lift hire. Let’s take a look.

Type of Boom Lift for Hire

The type of boom lift you hire will affect the cost. There are two main types – telescopic and knuckle booms. The telescopic ones are straight, while the knuckle booms articulate. They’re a bit more complex, and their design allows for extra flexibility to get into tight spaces or reach above obstacles. For these reasons, they can be a bit more expensive.

You can also choose between electric booms and diesel models. Electric booms are usually cheaper than diesel models, but they’re better suited for indoor or flat surface jobs. Diesel boom lifts are more powerful and suited to outdoor worksites, but they’ll cost a little more to run and hire.

Height of Job

The higher you need to go, the more it’s likely to cost. A 12-metre boom lift will be less expensive than a 34-metre model. That’s because bigger machines are more complex, require more maintenance, and are often in higher demand.

When you ask for a quote, have a good idea of the maximum height you’ll need to reach so you get the right machine for the job.

Duration of Job

Boom lift hire is usually charged on a daily, weekly, or monthly rate. As with most hire equipment, the longer you hire, the cheaper it becomes per day.

If your job will take more than a few days, it’s worth asking about long-term hire discounts. You might be surprised how much you can save.

Location

Where you’re located can affect the price too.

If your site is a fair distance from the hire company, there might be extra delivery or pick-up charges. Regional jobs may also cost more due to travel time or limited access to equipment in the area.

Performance Tower Hire is based in North Brisbane, so we do a lot of jobs in the local area here. We cover the whole of South East Queensland though, with a wide fleet of boom lifts ready to go.

Site Access

Some sites take a lot of extra work to actually get the boom lift into to get the job done. There could be obstacles in the way, a steep slope or lots of mud – these are the kind of challenges that can bump up the price. Extra time and manpower may be required for delivery and setup and the hire company has to recoup that somehow.

A good hire company will be able to recommend the right machine for you after a site visit or even if you provide them a detailed description of the site.

Weight of Load

Different models of boom lifts are designed to carry different loads. Some will only be able to support one worker with their tools, others will be equipped to have two or three people in the basket working on a job.

You’ll need a machine with a bigger load capacity if you’re lifting heavy gear or multiple workers. Those types of boom lifts tend to cost more.

Wet or Dry Hire

Dry hire is when you operate the boom yourself; wet hire is when you get a licensed boom lift operator as part of the package to operate it for you.

Wet hire costs more, but then you don’t have to operate the boom lift yourself. An experienced operator gets straight to work and will have the skills to get the job done efficiently and well.

In many cases, the cost is justified – particularly if you don’t have experienced or licensed boom lift operators on your team.
